Adventure and Wellness
Cusco has a special magnetism. Both the city and its Sacred Valley are surrounded by Andean nature and a series of pre-Hispanic sites. Both are destinations that promise all kinds of experiences, as well as the chance to spend a few days focused on health and wellness.
Experiences in the Sacred Valley
The centuries-old relationship between Peruvians and the mountains and rivers has endured over time, becoming a source of pride that attracts travelers in search of a memorable adventure.
High-altitude adventures
The Quechua term “Apu” carries two powerful meanings: “god” and “mountain.” These great presences that watch over the Peruvian Andes were, in the Inca empire, objects of respect and awe, associated with the concept of divinity. Today, walking these paths, which combine culture, landscapes, and adventure, still moves us deeply.
In the Sacred Valley you can find hikes with different levels of difficulty. The trek to the Huchuy Qosqo archaeological complex crosses Andean landscapes and rural communities on the way to the pre-Hispanic ruins. It is a moderate-level route, less crowded and very authentic, that can be done as a day trip. A very easy and unconventional option is llama trekking. Hikes are organized alongside these friendly animals through high-Andean landscapes, where you also have the chance to get to know local communities. Without a doubt, a unique experience.
Also highly recommended is a horseback ride through Maras and Moray. You can ride through rural landscapes and combine the horseback ride with a visit to the Maras salt pans and the Moray agricultural terraces, two of the most special places in the Sacred Valley. For sports lovers who want to experience that same route with a bit more physical demand, there are mountain biking routes around Chinchero, Maras, and Moray. Some combine stretches of paved road and dirt trails; others have more technical descents. It is an excellent way to explore these cultural and historic sites while keeping up your exercise routine.
For those seeking adrenaline, doing the via ferrata with zip lines is a must. This activity combines climbing the via ferrata on a rock wall, then descending through several zip lines: along the way, you get to enjoy some of the best views of the valley. Another kind of adventure is offered by rafting on the Urubamba River, which also has different difficulty ranges and can even be organized as a family activity. It’s important to know that the most demanding sections depend on the river’s conditions and the season.
Adventure sports aren’t the only way to have a unique experience in the Sacred Valley. It is also possible to organize guided hikes through Pisac, Lamay, Calca, or Urubamba, away from the typical tourist circuits. This offers the chance to stop in small towns, get closer to traditional activities and the daily life of local residents, see agricultural terraces, and take in mountain landscapes that stay in your memory.
The Sacred Valley is best discovered when you let yourself be surprised by its unexpected routes and experiences. The concierge service at Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa can help design private routes tailored to the group’s preferences and physical fitness level, as well as recommend experiences that will turn your stay into an adventure to remember.
