Commitment to Sustainability
Intursa hotels have been named Biosphere Committed, an international recognition that confirms the commitment of the group to continuous improvement in sustainability.
A Sustainable Path
Biosphere certification is an international system for applying continuous improvement processes for companies and destinations, linked to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets of the United Nations. From now on, all Intursa hotels have Biosphere Committed recognition.
Sustainable and Prosperous Destinations
Being Biosphere Committed is so much more than a distinction. It means being part of an international methodology that drives continuous improvement in sustainability. It is the only sustainability management and certification methodology for companies and destinations that highlights and shares sustainable efforts connected to the SDGs.
Intursa operates in Peru, a megadiverse country with an ancestral legacy; its hotels are located in destinations rich in natural and cultural heritage. Aware of this privilege, the group has integrated a vision of sustainability into every aspect of its corporate and operational activities and the hotel experience.
Today, immersed in the first stage of Biosphere certification, Intursa is committed to further aligning its practices with these global standards. Its areas of action are the responsible use of natural resources, a sustainable organizational culture, a positive impact on the communities that host the hotels, the contribution to the local economy, and the promotion of cultural heritage. The responsibility is great, but it is assumed with conviction.
Concrete Actions
This is a path that has already been traveled. Since the beginning of its history as a hotel group dedicated to tourism, more than fifty years ago, its commitment to the planet and to the cities and communities in which it operates has been permanent, as has its sense of responsibility towards people: those it serves, those it works with, and those with whom it coexists in each destination.
In 2023, it relaunched its corporate sustainability vision to focus on the most innovative actions and criteria that set the global agenda. The sustainability strategy of Intursa is based on its purpose: to bring happiness to people and prosperity to their destinations.
Thus, becoming Biosphere Committed was not a coincidence. It was achieved through concrete actions that reflect a real commitment to sustainability. Some of these actions involve participating in projects that improve the environment economically and socially, such as collaborating in social events in the community; lending facilities when possible; collaborating with the local administration on projects or campaigns for social purposes through donations, sponsorships, food banks, volunteering, and more; and organizing or participating in working groups through which social projects are developed collaboratively.
Other actions are connected to its food and waste management. Intursa has a policy of donating leftover food to social entities for better use. Efforts are made to minimize food waste, always seeking to make the most of resources. In addition, it has partnerships to recycle its waste, turning it into compost, animal feed, and reinserting recyclable materials (such as paper, cardboard, glass, and plastic) into various industries. This work contributes to the management of the carbon footprint, which is measured every year, seeking to reduce CO2 emissions.
Guests are offered visits and activities organized by local guides or companies, thus promoting economic activity in the destination that hosts the hotel and offering visitors added value and a unique and authentic local experience.
Some time ago, the World Tourism Organization warned that the hotel and tourism industry “must urgently begin its transformation towards environmental and social sustainability, gradually eliminating its climate impact and ensuring positive benefits for all its stakeholders, particularly local communities, ecosystems, and its value chain,” and Intursa took those words seriously. In addition to its commitment to sustainability, recognized by this new award, there is one certainty: what is done with purpose lasts over time.
